Grade 309 (and its low-carbon derivative, 309L/309LSi) is a highly alloyed austenitic stainless steel wire designed specifically for critical high-temperature operations and demanding welding scenarios. With approximately 23% to 25% Chromium and 12% to 14% Nickel, the alloy establishes an exceptionally stable chromium oxide scale on its surface. This scale functions as a durable defense system against oxidation and sulfur attack at temperatures peaking at 1000°C (1832°F).
The key to our premium 309 wire's success is a strictly controlled chemistry composition. Our metallurgical process maintains a precise Ferrite Number (FN 4-12) in the as-welded state. This presence of delta ferrite is crucial to preventing hot cracking during solidification, which is a common hazard in highly constrained joints of dissimilar materials.
Wulian Yuxin's 309 stainless wire ensures smooth wire feedability, stable arc characteristics, and minimal spatter because of our micro-alloying design and advanced continuous surface polishing procedures.
In industrial fabrication, one of the most critical structural tasks is joining carbon steels or low-alloy steels directly to austenitic stainless steels. Attempting this with standard welding consumables (such as ER308L) can lead to alloy dilution, brittle martensitic phases, and sudden structural failures. Wulian Yuxin's 309 Stainless Wire functions as the essential transition buffer.
Due to its high reserve of alloying elements (Cr and Ni), our 309 wire easily tolerates dilution from mild steel without losing its fully austenitic-ferritic microstructure. This makes it the global standard for:
Operating from Rizhao City, Shandong Province, Wulian Yuxin integrates state-of-the-art drawing processes with deep industrial capacity.
Our 15,000-square-meter facility is equipped with automated dry and wet wire-drawing benches, digitalized diameter monitoring systems, and automatic tension control spoolers. These technical elements eliminate common wire feed disruptions caused by cross-spool wrapping or microscopic wire defects.
Located near Qingdao Port, one of China's most active maritime hubs, we offer highly efficient shipping options that minimize supply chain transit times. Wulian Yuxin works directly with Tier-1 Chinese steel mills to source raw wire rods under rigorous melt-batch specifications, ensuring consistent trace element values (like Sulfur, Phosphorus, and Cobalt) that are critical for nuclear, petrochemical, and military applications.
Understanding the elemental differences between 309 variants ensures optimal weld pool control, wetting behavior, and grain refinement.
| Alloy Grade | C (%) | Cr (%) | Ni (%) | Mn (%) | Si (%) | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Key Performance Profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ER309 | 0.08–0.12 | 23.0–25.0 | 12.0–14.0 | 1.0–2.5 | 0.30–0.65 | ≥ 550 | Highest carbon level; superb high-temperature creep strength. |
| ER309L | ≤ 0.03 | 23.0–25.0 | 12.0–14.0 | 1.0–2.5 | 0.30–0.65 | ≥ 520 | Ultra-low carbon eliminates carbide precipitation at grain boundaries. |
| ER309LSi | ≤ 0.03 | 23.0–25.0 | 12.0–14.0 | 1.0–2.5 | 0.65–1.00 | ≥ 530 | Enhanced Silicon levels optimize bead wash, wetting, and high-speed robotic welding. |
Silicon (Si) Optimization: Our ER309LSi variant features elevated silicon percentages, which lower the surface tension of the molten metal. This improves puddle wetting and bead contour. This chemical balance is ideal for automated automotive assembly lines, robotic piping systems, and structures requiring clean aesthetic finishes with minimal post-weld grinding.

Answers to common technical and metallurgical questions asked by welding engineers and procurement specialists.
ER309L has a carbon content restricted to less than 0.03%. This prevents carbon from bonding with chromium to form chromium carbides along the grain boundaries at high temperatures (sensitization). By eliminating carbide precipitation, the weld maintains its corrosion resistance and avoids intergranular corrosion cracking.
The Ferrite Number indicates the amount of delta-ferrite phase remaining in the primarily austenitic weld metal. A range of 4 to 12 FN prevents hot cracking during cooling. If the FN is too low, the weld metal can crack during solidification. If it is too high, it can speed up sigma-phase embrittlement under high-temperature service conditions. Wulian Yuxin controls raw chemistry to maintain a stable FN.
For Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG) with 309 wire, we recommend using Argon with 1–2% Oxygen or Argon with 1–2% CO2 to ensure arc stability and wetting. For Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG), 100% pure Argon is recommended to protect the tungsten electrode and avoid carbon contamination.
We use high-precision shaving and proprietary multi-stage drawing dies to produce a clean surface finish with a diameter tolerance within ±0.01mm. Additionally, we apply a ultra-thin, hydrogen-free feeding lubricant to protect the wire without contaminating the weld.
We offer spooled wire in 1kg, 5kg, 15kg, and 20kg weights (spooled on plastic, wire basket, or fiber reels), as well as heavy drum packaging (100kg to 250kg) for high-duty automated stations. TIG rods are packaged in 5kg or 10kg tubes. Standard delivery is handled through Qingdao port, with FOB, CIF, or DDP delivery terms.
