The ER309 TIG filler rod is a high-alloy welding consumable formulated primarily to join stainless steels to mild or low-alloy steels. It contains a higher concentration of Chromium (Cr) and Nickel (Ni) compared to standard grade 308 rods. This chemical composition is designed to tolerate dilution from carbon steel substrates during the welding process without forming brittle martensitic phases.

By preventing the creation of martensite, ER309 rods lower the risk of hot cracking and underbead micro-cracks. The low-carbon variant, ER309L, limits carbon levels to 0.03% or lower. This prevents chromium carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries when exposed to high temperatures, thereby maintaining corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone (HAZ).

What is the difference between ER309 and ER309L TIG filler rods?
The primary difference is the carbon content. ER309 allows a maximum carbon content of 0.08%, whereas ER309L restricts carbon to a maximum of 0.03%.
